Fiuggi (modern-day Felcia or even Anticoli) has a slogan which suggests that the water is strong enough to “break the stone”. The expression is attributed to Michelangelo, who went there to take care of his kidney stones in 1549. However, the 20th century was when the truly tourist activity began, with the construction of the grand Art Nouveau hotels, when the main spring began to take Boniface VIII’s name; he too had come from nearby to receive treatment back in the 13th century.  This is the era of great cultural and social activity, to which nobility and the upper middle class were called. Due to its close and strategic relationship with Rome and Naples, Fiuggi still welcomes a great number of spa towns and tourists who attend its conferences and large-scale events such as the Fiuggi Family Festival, an annual meeting of the cinema world entirely devoted to families. Heading up to the high town, you come across the medieval citadel in a succession of alleyways, small squares, steep stairways and houses built one on top of the other, in a relaxed atmosphere.

Fiuggi
THEY WERE THERE...

As regards my illness, I have high hopes, thank God. Nevertheless, I must drink water, so say the doctors.” “…As for my illness, I feel fairly well, since until now I have felt as though I was dead. I have a good doctor, but I believe more in prayer than medicine” … “As for my illness, I am doing well, and as regards the treatment that I have been on for two months, I drink, day and night, the water from a spring which dissolves stone.”

Michelangelo Buonarroti , Sculptor, Painter, Architect, Poet, Town planner

“I still do not know why she said yes when I proposed that she accompany me to Fiuggi for the Festival of Stuzze on 2 February. At the most fascinating moment, when the tree trunks were all aflame and creaking in pain, I read her a letter from Ingrid Bergman. It was really strange, these faces glowing red all around us. This town gave me the feeling of being in one of Nero's crazed dreams as Rome burned.”
