Montecatini Terme is located in the heart of Tuscany and it joined the EHTTA. The town owes its fame to its spring water, rich in vital minerals which still gives it excellent status in the international spa-town scenario. The town’s history is inextricably linked to that of its thermal spring. Montecatini should be explored on foot and there are plenty of places where you can relax and restore your equilibrium its gardens, its broad avenues, and luxuriant parks, which are the lovely setting of the spa buildings, masterpieces  of art architecture. Along with the other buildings in the Art-Nouveau style erected in the early century, they form a delightful and authentic open-air museum.

The town’s history is inextricably linked to that of its thermal spring. The therapeutic properties of Montecatini waters were already known in the Romans’ time. These waters originate from a hydro-mineral basin that is located at a depth of 60-80 meters, mainly belonging to the chloride-sulphate-sodium water type and are bacteriologically pure. They have been carefully examined for their physical, chemical, clinical and pharmacological aspects, to such an extent as to generate a very rich medical literature. It was thus demonstrated that they have extraordinary beneficial effects on your health and body. They are mostly employed to treat the digestive and metabolic systems.

Unfortunately, between 15th and 16th century, use of the springs and the development in the area suffered due to constant battles and incursions. Not until the 18th, Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo  gave birth to our Thermal Town, ordering the building of Bagno Regio (1773), Terme Leopoldine (1775) and, finally, Terme Tettuccio (1779). This reformist Prince also planned an efficient canalization of the spring waters and ordered the land reclamation of the marshy areas in order to clean the air. In  no time “Bagni di Montecatini” (as it was known then) had become one of the most highly renowed and exclusive European spas of Belle Epoque. Famous personality came here from all over the world to ‘drink the waters’, relax, meet, discuss business and politics. In the early 20th century our Terme had to be renovated because of the high number of visitors coming here.

THEY WERE THERE...

“Il peggio si è che da che son tornato da Montecatini non ho fatto numma ! E quasi un mese ! E là ho pur lavorato…non da ammarzzami certamente, ma infine se fossi restato là ancora tre giorni avrei finito l’istromentazione del primo atto ! E si che ve ne sono delle note in quello scigurato Atto Primo ! (d’Otello).”

Giuseppe Verdi, Compositeur.
